Sunday Shul - The Shema
In this week’s class Ross takes a closer look at the Shema. He begins the lesson by weaving current events (Faith and Politics) with early American history. He reads a letter that was written by a “famous politician” to an Hebrew congregation on August 17, 1790.
In that letter, this politician quotes from the Hebrew Prophet Micah. It is this text that Ross uses to launch into his class. There in Micah we read that all the people will “walk in the name of their God”, but “we” will walk in the name of YHWH our God.
What will happen that brings people from this to the picture we find in Zechariah 14? This is the subject of this class.
Ross takes a closer look at the Shema and then closes out with the Bible’s most oft repeated formula. Variations of this description of the character of God are found in the following texts:
Exodus 34:6-7
Numbers 14:18-19
Jonah 4:2
Joel 2:13
Micah 7:18
Psalm 86:15; 103:8; 145:8
2 Chronicles 30:9
Nehemiah 9:17, 31
Shalom from the synagogue without walls!
