The Bible Jesus Read – A Study into the Religious Life of Jesus and the early Church
In the time of Jesus and Paul, a portion of the Law of Moses (Genesis – Deuteronomy) was read every Sabbath in the synagogue along with an associated section from the Prophets. These weekly readings have been preserved for us in scribal notes found within the margins of the Hebrew Bible. According to these scribal notations, the Law of Moses was divided into 167 separate sections, and so it took between 3 and 3 ½ years to read through the entire Law of Moses. Jesus and Paul participated in these weekly readings. (See for example Luke 4:14-21, Acts 13:13-15 and Acts 15:21).
Jesus claimed that Moses wrote of him (e.g. John 5:39, 46) and through the character Lazarus, in one of his parables, he declared that if they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone rises from the dead (Luke 16:31).
It can be determined from a study of the life of Jesus, as recorded in the gospel accounts that the ministry of Jesus lasted between 3 and 3 ½ years – the length of time for one to read through these weekly lessons, and thus according to the writers of the New Testament, the Word became flesh nearly 2,000 years ago in the environs of Galilee and the surrounding villages and towns.
On October the 6th, 2007, Roots of Faith will begin a weekly Bible Study based upon this ancient cycle of readings from the Law and the Prophets. Each week for 167 consecutive weeks, Ross Nichols will preach Moses every Sabbath in the synagogue (See Acts 15:21). The Sabbath service will consist of an exciting and informative lesson, meant to illustrate and illuminate the texts of the Bible by exploring the historical, linguistic and cultural setting in which they were written. We then read the weekly readings from the Law of Moses and the prophets as read in the ancient synagogue. Relevant New Testament texts and topics will be covered each week opening the Scriptures for the student (See Luke 24:27, 44-45). After the reading of the Law and Prophets we open the floor for questions and answers. It is hoped that we can even take call ins before too long.
Roots of Faith is an independent, religious educational ministry that encourages Christians to re-examine their Hebraic heritage, thereby inspiring a more biblically authentic lifestyle. Christians are instructed to “Walk as he (Jesus) walked” – I John 2.6. Roots of Faith seeks to train Christians to do just that.
Ross Nichols is the founder and president of Roots of Faith. He is a student and teacher of the Bible, placing special emphasis on Christian origins and Hebraic studies. His primary field of interest is the Second Temple Period, specifically as it relates to the study of Jesus and the movement that emerged in his name. Aside from his studies in the Bible and Biblical literature, Ross is a student of biblical Hebrew. He is a respected teacher on Ancient Hebrew Culture and Torah or Law as understood and practiced in the early Church.
