As the sun comes up around the globe on the 1st day of the week, people will be celebrating the resurrection of Jesus on the holiday known as Easter.
Jesus, however, knew nothing of this holiday. The New Testament book of Acts in the King James version uses the word Easter in chapter 12, but a close study of the passage in its original Greek reveals that the passage leads astray when translated this way - a fact corrected by most other translators. The season is Spring and the festivals associated with the Passion story in the authentic gospel story are Passover, Unleavened Bread, and Firstfruits.
In this week’s lesson, since there is no regular Torah and Prophet reading, Ross Nichols concentrates on the intent of the gospel writers - showing how Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection tie to the ancient festivals of the early rain season.
Beginning in Leviticus 23, he discusses the details of Passover that you may not be familiar with. Reading some from a book written by Joseph Good on the festivals, he paints the portrait of a death that seemingly was defined by an age old plan.
You will not want to miss this week’s lesson. The class is in two parts. The third section is a reading performed by the Roots of Faith Congregation of each gospel writer’s account of the resurrection. The account contained in the gospel of John was read from the Jewish New Testament by Ross’ dad who is visiting Ross for a few weeks.
Check it out and let us know what you think of the class.
Shalom, Ross
