Israel’s enemies, bent on their destruction are always scheming. They are relentless in their attempt…ts to bring harm and destroy peace. This week, some if these extremists employed one of the oldest tricks in the book – the Latin epic poem “The Aeneid” that is. The plot played out this week was like a modern re-telling of Virgil’s work except that the enemy did not attempt to penetrate the opponent’s walls in a wooden horse but aboard an “innocent” vessel bringing in “humanitarian aid”. The outcry over Israel’s actions is incredible. Well I say “good job Israel”! As the Trojan priest Laocoon declared in the Aeneid,”Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes” – “I fear Greeks, even those bearing gifts”. The old trick used by the Greeks, now called the Trojan horse, has become a symbol of any trick which results in an enemy being allowed, through deception, to enter an otherwise secure zone. Indeed there is nothing new under the sun. A study of history is often the best way to prepare for the future.
